玄武洞ミュージアム展示解説

円山川は延長68kmに及ぶ1級河川です。玄武洞ミュージアムのあたりは河口から約7kmですが、勾配がとても小さいために潮が上がってきており、汽水域です。 玄武洞は採石が古くからされていましたが、もともと六角形の形に割れているのと、円山川のすぐそばなので川に持ってくればすぐに船で色々なところに運ぶことができました。 また円山川は豊岡がかばんの町となったはじまりでもあります。円山川は2年に1度は大氾濫が起きていたといわれ、米の収穫が不安定だったので、その時にできる仕事として、肥沃な河原に生えている「コリヤナギ」を用いて柳のかごを編み始めました。円山川に生息する種の数は近畿地方の中でも非常に多く、流域の湿地はラムサール条約にも登録されており、玄武洞ミュージアムのあたりでも様々な魚や鳥、植物が観察できます。また、秋には「川あらし」という、朝に霧が立ちこめ海に向かってとても速く流れていく美しい風景もみられます。

Maruyama river is a main river of Tajima region and 68km in length. Genbudo Museum is located along this river about 7km from the sea, the brackish area. This river had been very convenient for the development of Toyooka because people could carry the hexagonally-cracked stone of Genbudo immediately by the boat.

Moreover, Maruyama river had a important role of the beginning of the bag industry in Toyooka. Due to the smooth gradient, heavy flood had been happened no less than once in 2 years. Under this situation of unstable harvest of rice, people started weaving wicker crafts by using willow that glew wild in the fertile land along the river.

The number of living species is extremely high in this river. “Lower Maruyama River and the surrounding rice paddies” is designated as a ramsar site. You can see many kind of plants, fishes, and birds.

In autumn morning, a rare phenomenon “River storm” can be seen. You can see the fog moving fast toward the sea.
